Junior running back Christian McCaffrey announced Monday morning that he will sit out the Sun Bowl, where Stanford is scheduled to face North Carolina in El Paso, Texas on Dec. 30, in order to prepare for the NFL Draft.

The star running back took to Twitter to announce his decision:

“We understand that this was a very difficult decision,” head coach David Shaw said. “For three years Christian has not only been a great player, but a great teammate as well. We wish him great success at the next level, as we continue our preparation for the Sun Bowl.”

The Stanford standout amassed a total of 6,987 career all-purpose yards with the Cardinal and finished second in last season’s Heisman voting.

News broke earlier this month that he would forgo his senior year of college to enter the NFL Draft early. He is projected to be a late-first-round selection.

In a recent press conference held by McCaffrey, Shaw lauded both his accomplishments at Stanford and his decision to play in the NFL.

“What he’s done here at Stanford is jaw-dropping. It’s awe-inspiring. It’s up there with Andrew Luck and John Elway and Jim Plunkett — guys that have done phenomenal things,” he said. “I think he’s done all that you can do at the college football level. I think he’s mentally, physically and emotionally prepared for this next step, and we are excited for him.”

Junior quarterback Keller Chryst will start at Arizona on Saturday in an attempt to revitalize a stagnant offense, head coach David Shaw announced Tuesday. Chryst will take over for senior Ryan Burns, who threw three interceptions against Colorado this past weekend.

The Buffaloes’ offense rammed the Cardinal in a 10-5 loss, putting Stanford’s record at 4-3.

The game demonstrates a clear regression from the 42-10 victory over Colorado just under a year ago, in a season during which Kevin Hogan led the Cardinal to a Rose Bowl victory. While last season Hogan and McCaffrey put Stanford at the top of the Pac-12 in scoring, the team has sunk to 126th in the nation in points per game this year.

Stanford fell from a No. 15 position in the rankings after a loss to the Washington State Cougars three weeks ago. In spite of a recent last-minute win against Notre Dame, Saturday’s game against Colorado did little to reaffirm the team’s status as one to be reckoned with.

Now, given a choice between two less experienced quarterbacks, Shaw is changing the game plan mid-season to bring glory back to the Farm in time for the Big Game. The decision to start Chryst, a Palo Alto High School standout and the pre-season favorite for the position, seems to be a rethinking of Shaw’s earlier choice.

“We need more production from the position,” Shaw said. Despite the evident underperformance from Burns, Shaw acknowledged that no one player is to blame. “It would be really easy if it were just the quarterback.”

Stanford researchers have invented the first lithium-ion battery that shuts itself down upon overheating and restarts when it cools down, according to a Stanford News report. The new development greatly reduces risk due to overheating.

Several techniques have been previously used to address battery overheating, such as adding flame retardants to the electrolyte used in the battery. However, these techniques are all irreversible, so the battery is not functional after reaching a certain temperature.

In order to address this problem, Stanford professor of engineering Zhenan Bao, Stanford engineer Yi Cui and postdoctoral scholar Zheng Chen used tiny nickel particles coated with graphene and embedded in a film of elastic polyethylene. When in contact with one another, these particles conduct electricity. However, upon thermal expansion of the film, the particles spread apart, halting the flow of current.

The threshold for this battery was found to be 160 degrees Fahrenheit (70 degrees Celsius). Above this temperature, the polyethylene film expanded, causing the nickel particles to separate. When the temperature fell back to 160 degrees Fahrenheit (70 degrees Celsius), the film shrunk back, causing the battery to generate electricity again.

Furthermore, according to Bao, “We can even tune the temperature higher or lower depending on how many particles we put in or what type of polymer materials we choose.”

The material was tested several times by repeatedly applying heat, and it quickly resumed generating electricity when it cooled.

“Compared with previous approaches, our design provides a reliable, fast, reversible strategy that can achieve both high battery performance and improved safety,” Cui said. This technology is expected to be highly useful in place of traditional batteries.

Board Chair Steven A. Denning and President John Hennessy issued a statement on behalf of the Board of Trustees to the conveners of a major climate change conference in Paris to look to universities for guidance.

Denning and Hennessy urged the conveners of the twenty-first gathering of the United Nations “Conference of the Parties,” or the COP21, to consider Stanford as a pioneer on dealing with climate change. In the statement, they emphasized Stanford’s new campus energy system, expected to reduce campus greenhouse gas emissions by 68 percent.

The Chair and the President also addressed the strides Stanford has made in research and teaching with respect to climate change, citing the Woods Institute for Environment, the Precourt Institute for Energy and the Steyer-Taylor Center for Energy Policy and Finance as investments Stanford has made on the climate change front. They noted the crucial role of students, pointing out that students “recognize climate change as a critical issue for their generation and for the world.”

Other major areas of focus that Denning and Hennessy highlighted are on-campus transportation and building energy efficiency, both efforts that they urge COP21 participants to look to when considering the role universities play in the global climate change effort.

Denning and Hennessy encouraged “all institutions, at all levels, to confront the climate challenge ambitiously and with urgency.”

The Board of Trustees is considering a plan to construct new graduate residences that would house around 2,400 students, which would increase the number of graduate students housed on campus from approximately 55 to about 75 percent.

The residences would be located in Escondido Village in the vicinity of Hoskins and McFarland courts.

Increasing the number of graduate students housed on campus has been a priority of the Board because of the inconvenient Palo Alto rental market.

“We want to continue to recruit the very best talent to Stanford, and many prospective grad students tell us it is a high priority to live on campus or nearby,” said Vice Provost for Graduate Education Patricia Gumport.

New on-campus housing would open up space in Palo Alto for postdoctoral students.

The design of the new residences encompases 1.6 million to 1.8 million gross square feet and includes studio apartments, two-bedroom apartments and junior studios.

Gumport said she hopes that such a complex would increase the quality of life for graduate students and foster a strong community. To this end, several amenities are under consideration, including a pub, exercise spaces, a cinema, a dance studio and underground parking.

The University intends to schedule meetings with graduate students and nearby neighborhoods to gather feedback on the proposal, and hopes to finalize plans in the near future.
