Stanford Hospitals and Clinics (SHC)’s recent decision to implement job cuts and offload services to an external contractor has prompted allegations of negligence and worker abuse from community members, as well as a petition from the Stanford Labor Action Coalition (SLAC) protesting the moves.

According to the SLAC petition, SHC has recently laid off a dozen janitorial workers. In addition, 13 of the School of Medicine’s original 38 housekeeping assistants have been offered voluntary service packages and relieved, according to SLAC member Laurel Fish ’14. Some have since been rehired in part-time capacities.

Of the remaining 25, 16 have been granted only provisional employment until October 2013 and nine have been converted into “float workers” without any guarantee of permanent employment.

Meanwhile, according to the petition, six of nine janitors at the Clark Center, a research facility affiliated with SHC, were relieved of their positions in a process that began last November. The janitors were subsequently rehired by a subcontractor– UGL Unicco– to perform the same job for less money and fewer benefits.

The SLAC petition demands that current workers be guaranteed employment beyond October 2013, that float workers be guaranteed full-time regular jobs, that the pay and benefit levels or full-time status of Clark Center workers be restored and that the University hire all housekeeping assistants and managers directly, ceasing both existing and new contracts with any subcontractors.

According to Fish, the online petition resulted from a series of meetings with workers at the Stanford Hospital, the School of Medicine and the Clark Center. Fish said that SLAC members tried to reach out to the administration several times in November and December but that they were turned away, leading them to create the petition.

The University does not plan, however, to respond to the petition.

“This is a two-month-old issue,” said University spokeswoman Lisa Lapin. “Action has already happened, and I don’t think anything further is going to happen.

Lapin said that the University had hired a subcontractor to manage janitorial services at the Clark Center to avoid using hospital housekeeping staff in a different type of facility.

“When the Clark Center housekeepers were offered positions with UGL, every effort was to be made to make these positions at the top of the pay scale, with full house benefits and seniority vacation time,” Lapin said. “Stanford does have standards by which it asks its subcontractors to abide.”

Najja Kossally ’13, the SLAC member who started the petition, argued that subcontracting has become increasingly popular because it releases the University from responsibility to its workers.

“If the subcontractor is really terrible, Stanford can say, ‘Well, it’s not really our issue,’” he said.

Since the changes were implemented last year, both SLAC members and hospital workers have claimed that workloads have increased by unreasonable amounts. One worker at SHC, who– like all the workers interviewed for this article– asked that her name not be used to help protect her job security, said that she is now expected to clean 18 rooms in the same amount of time she used to clean nine, and that she often is not given free time for lunch.

Another worker at the Stanford School of Medicine described how he was injured as a result of increased workloads.

“When I came back, [the managers] would just throw more work at me,” he said. “This happens in big numbers, and I want to get the voice out for many of my co-workers.”

The worker also asserted that managers had subjected him and other workers to poor treatment, citing examples of verbal harassment– including being told by a manager that he was making too much money as well as receiving warnings from another that she would be “watching” him and his co-workers in the cameras. In addition, he said that the management has exacerbated workers’ unease with regards to being rehired in October when their contracts expire.

“Our future is very, very unstable,” he said. “There are always rumors about a new company coming in anytime and the management tells us we’re not going to rehire you.”

After he and some of his co-workers presented their concerns to Amir Dan Rubin, the hospital’s president, the worker reported being quizzed in small meetings about their experience at SHC and being offered recommendation letters to look for jobs elsewhere.

Another housekeeping assistant at the Stanford School of Medicine alleged a lack of respect by managers when he was denied his request for additional bereavement leave after his mother passed away.

“My manager asked for a death certificate,” he said. “It didn’t seem like he believed me.”

Lapin emphasized that the University cannot get involved with the workers’ grievances due to the existence of a workers’ union. However, one of the workers claimed that neither the HR department nor the union would address their concerns and often sided with the managers.

When asked about this concern, Lapin said that the union may be unable to address concerns at the moment because, until recently, it was embroiled in biennial elections.

“The University can’t get involved because [the issue is between] a contractor and the… union,” she said. “I couldn’t speak to any problems that they would have there.”

Kossally said that he hoped the petition would move students to demand that the University step in.

“The University will often claim that this is not your issue because the workers have unions [to help them],” he said. “No, this is your issue, and of course you should be involved.”

The day began at 7:15 a.m., when I grudgingly got out of my bed and threw on the crummiest clothes I could find. I met the rest of the volunteers for the March 3 Habitat for Humanity Build outside of Tresidder Union. Our tired faces lit up when we saw the bag of bagels that was provided for us — the day seemed to be off to a good start.

 

The Daly City project we would work on that day was the largest ever for Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco. The final result would be a four-story condominium development projected to house 36 families.

 

We reached the construction site at around 8:30 a.m. There were males and females of all ages and ethnicities lined up in front of the toolshed to sign waivers. Of course, by the time it was my turn, they had run out of waivers. I remembered what Keren Mikva ’12, co-president of Stanford’s Habitat for Humanity chapter, had said about the number of volunteers today being “unheard of.”

I stood awkwardly in my oversized construction hat and mismatched pair of gloves, shivering in the morning breeze and unsure of what to do next, until Dawn Adams, the charismatic construction manager on the site, asked for everyone’s attention. Her eyes twinkled from behind circular glasses and her bright red hair was tied into playful pigtails, but her energetic voice was firm and no-nonsense. She talked briefly about Habitat’s general mission and the manner in which the organization operates.

 

Families that qualify for Habitat typically make 40 to 60 percent of the area’s median income and often live in very crowded spaces or spend exorbitant portions of their income on housing expenses, she said. Habitat keeps homes affordable by implementing zero-interest mortgage payments and calculating the duration of the mortgage based on how much each family can afford to pay. For their part, families must commit to an initial down payment of 500 hours of “sweat equity,” meaning that they physically work on Habitat’s project alongside volunteers.

 

“I think that’s probably the coolest part of the program,” Mikva said. “Their slogan is a ‘hand-up,’ not a ‘hand-out.’”

 

Dawn concluded her talk by emphasizing how integral volunteers are to Habitat’s projects.

 

“Ninety percent of the work done in building Habitat homes is done by volunteers like you guys,” she said. “There’s no carpenters waiting in the wings to come finish things off. We want to acknowledge and appreciate that.”

 

Next, Ryan Poling, a Habitat employee from Atlanta, Ga., gave us a safety briefing.

 

“The first thing that we say about safety out here is that safety is a personal concern,” he said. “This is an active construction site; things are changing all the time. You all need to be looking out for yourselves.”

 

After he had finished, it was time for us to choose a crew to join.

As I was considering which crew I wanted to be on, I thought about what Frank Guzman ’14, the Stanford Habitat chapter’s education and advocacy coordinator, had said to me earlier:

 

“I think it’s really nice that the level of physical fitness for anyone who goes on one of these builds doesn’t matter,” he said. “There are crews that do a lot of light work that anyone can do, and then there are crews that require you not to be afraid of heights or to do some heavy lifting.”

 

Not trusting myself in any situation that would involve hammers, nails or heavy objects, I appreciated the variety of options offered. I decided to go with the interior painting crew — of which Poling was the team leader — along with around five other volunteers from Stanford. One of these volunteers was Sean Scott ’15, who will be the build coordinator for Stanford’s chapter next year. Scott was driven to get involved with Habitat because of its physical aspect.

 

“I like building things,” he said. “I like physical work.”

 

Poling showed us the different tools we would need and explained the cutting, scraping and rolling techniques that we would use. As we began to paint, I realized it was harder than it seemed. First, cutting is painfully boring. Second, those long, wooden roller extensions may look like fun, but my neighbor whom I nearly whacked in the face twice may not agree. On top of that, every time I tilted my head back to get a better look at the ceiling, my helmet and goggles — which I wore over my glasses — slid back, and I would have to adjust them with my paint-smeared gloves. By noon, when we had lunch break, I had somehow managed to get more paint on my clothes, my hair and my shoes than everyone else combined — and quite possibly, more than on the wall. I must admit though, I felt a strange sense of pride and satisfaction as I walked into the Subway across the street splattered in white paint.

 

After lunch, I talked to Poling about his experience with Habitat.

 

“What I like most about the dynamic of Habitat is that you get to work side by side with the beneficiaries of your work,” he said. “You get a really nice, close connection.”

 

He also discussed how Habitat’s project goes beyond just empowering individual families and relates to larger social issues.

 

“One of the ways we’ve been dealing with the foreclosure crisis is buying abandoned homes from banks and then fixing them,” Poling said. “That puts our families in homes and improves entire neighborhoods.”

 

Poling has been working with Habitat for Humanity through AmeriCorps for a year and a half. He has a degree in construction and management.

 

By 3 p.m., around an hour before we called it a day, three other Stanford students and I had finished painting just one room in one condominium. Thinking about how long it took us to complete the task in light of all the other rooms that still needed to be painted was overwhelming. And that was only one small part of all the tasks waiting to be completed. For the first time, I got an idea of how much can be accomplished in two years, mostly because of inexperienced volunteers like me.

 

“I looked back at what we did, and I felt a sense of pride because I could see my volunteering efforts,” Guzman had said earlier. “They were tangible.”

 

I felt the same way.

Night Outreach, a Stanford community service group committed to establishing relationships with the homeless community of Palo Alto, celebrated the opening of the first women’s-only homeless shelter program in Palo Alto last week. The shelter, a joint effort between Night Outreach and Innvision, the largest housing provider in Santa Clara County, is a new addition to the only homeless shelter program in Palo Alto, Hotel de Zink.

In the new program, the Stanford students in Night Outreach will be “running everything on the ground,” according to Brenda Mutuma ’13, the group’s food and meal coordinator.

 

Night Outreach members raised approximately $22,000 to fund the project. In addition to receiving grants, they set up an online donation system, collected donations around campus and organized two fundraising drives with The Counter and Panda Express.

 

Night Outreach members were inspired by the Harvard Square Homeless Shelter, a Harvard University student-run shelter that has been in operation for 28 years, providing protection from the cold winter. Night Outreach decided to partner with Hotel de Zink to launch a similar project in the Palo Alto community.

 

The 15-bed Hotel de Zink shelter rotates through 12 area churches. Each church houses 12 to 17 people for one month. The women’s shelter will be an extension of the same format. Hotel de Zink has provided the new shelter with case managers, some of its overnight staff and training. Case managers select residents and help them find jobs and services. Night Outreach is responsible for providing the rest of the resources.

 

In her role as food and meal coordinator, Mutuma has responsibilities such as ensuring that meals reach the shelter on time and finding volunteers to cook meals. As a political science major, she is particularly interested in food policy, hunger politics and food security.

 

“Food is that one thing that everybody needs to survive, so why should anyone be deprived of that?” Mutuma said. “When you share food with someone, that’s another opportunity for learning about someone, for learning about yourself.”

 

The women’s shelter program is an expansion of Night Outreach’s efforts to interact with the local homeless community. “[We talk about] whatever they want to talk about, whatever we want to talk about,” Mutuma said. “People have an issue about how uncomfortable it might be, but it’s beautiful, a lot of the times. You run into a lot of their own personal stories that are really touching.”

 

The organization challenges participants to overcome prejudices and stereotypes through joining the Night Outreach walks, Mutuma said.

 

“When you stay in the Stanford bubble, you don’t get any exposure to what the world is really like, everything that the world has to offer and everything that everybody has to offer no matter their socioeconomic status,” Mutuma added.

 

On one of the walks, Kurt von Laven ’12, Night Outreach webmaster, met a man sitting in the corner of the train tracks, listening to the radio.

 

“He said that it made him feel connected to the world,” von Laven said. “That really struck me because it didn’t seem like something that would make me feel that way. It made me wonder how isolating his experiences had been.”

 

Members of Night Outreach also frequently visit the Opportunity Center, a local service provider for the homeless. At the Center, they lead activities such as art workshops for children and computer training programs.

 

“The biggest challenge for us, but also the most rewarding, is that it’s hard to know who’s going to be there,” von Laven said. “We try to make it very clear that we’re coming back, and that’s why it’s very important for us when we’re recruiting volunteers to make sure they are able to make that kind of a commitment.”

 

This commitment to the homeless population of Palo Alto is a central tenet of Night Outreach.

 

“I’m walking into this very humbled,” Mutuma said of her work with the women’s shelter at Hotel de Zink. “It’s all a learning opportunity and it’s a thank you to the members of the [homeless] community.”

Passing through White Plaza on a Tuesday afternoon, you are likely to spot a couple of guys playing hacky sack to dance music on the stage of the small amphitheater. You might assume that these men are pursuing a casual hobby or simply messing around between classes. The thought that they are practicing a serious aerobic sport would probably never cross your mind.

 

“Footbag,” commonly referred to as “hacky sack,” is a more than 30-year-old competitive sport, according to Steve Goldberg M.S. ’88, the club’s organizer. Over 350 clubs across the world are registered with the International Footbag Players’ Association (IPFA), which Goldberg co-founded (its website’s main server is run from his house).

 

Although the Stanford Footbag Club is affiliated with Stanford University and plays on campus, only a few players are actually Stanford students or alumni. Moreover, Goldberg, an engineering manager at Google, sponsors most of the club’s activities; the University does not provide any funding.

 

Despite the University’s lack of involvement, Goldberg maintained that footbag is still a Stanford institution. He said that the Stanford club, which was founded on campus in 1989, is the longest-running footbag club in the entire world. Moreover, the club has hosted the Western Regional Footbag Championships 10 times in the organization’s 22-year history.

 

At practice in White Plaza, Goldberg gestured to the four players around him.

 

“These are some of the top players in the world, by the way,” he said.

 

Alex Dworetzky, a 20-year-old Belmont resident, has been in the club since 2007. He has participated in a number of tournaments, including the 2009 and 2011 IFPA World Footbag Championships in Prague and Helsinki, respectively. Despite Dworetzky’s dedication to the sport, he was quick to note that this is only an after-work pastime, not his primary occupation.

 

Brian Sherrill, another frequent footbagger, is a 25-year-old Bay Area resident who also competed in Helsinki as well as many other footbagging events in the United States. Sherrill is one of the world’s best “stitchers,” according to Goldberg, meaning that he makes and sells high-quality footbags for players around the world.

 

The club is open to players of all skill levels.

 

And if they don’t know how to footbag?

 

“We can teach them to play,” Sherrill said with a grin.

 

Amotz Ziv Av, a native Israeli and postdoctoral scholar at the School of Medicine, joined only recently and is still learning all the basics.

 

In addition to novices, the Stanford Footbag Club attracts professionals from across the world, including Kim Mortensen of Denmark. Mortensen, another postdoctoral scholar at the School of Medicine, is one of the best freestyle footbag players from Copenhagen, Goldberg said. Although there are other players who join pick-up games every now and again, Goldberg said that these four athletes were the most regular.

 

The footbaggers prepare for competitions “sort of like how break dancers practice,” Goldberg said. “We go in a circle, and each person does as many tricks as they can without dropping the footbag. When they drop it, they pass it to the next player.”

 

In a competition, the players choreograph two-minute routines to music. They perform these routines in front of a panel of judges, trying to link together as many tricks as possible.

 

Although the Stanford club specializes in freestyle footbag, other clubs in the area play another style of footbag, called “footbag net.” Unlike freestyle footbag, which showcases an individual player’s skill, footbag net is played by kicking a footbag over a five-foot tall net, and is very much a team sport.

 

“Players spike the footbag,” Goldberg said. “It’s like volleyball with your feet.”

 

No matter the style, Goldberg and his group hope that the up-and-coming sport will continue to grow in popularity, not just on Stanford’s campus but across the world.

Center for Buddhist Studies works to expand presence on campus

Buddhism is one of the most practiced religions in the world. It is not merely a series of meditative exercises but a complex philosophy entrenched in the cultural traditions of East Asian peoples. The University, through the Ho Center for Buddhist Studies at Stanford (HCBSS), is dedicating time and resources to an area of study, which in the past, has not been emphasized academically on campus.

“Buddhism is often not well understood in the United States,” said religious studies professor Paul Harrison. “Just under half of Americans, according to a recent survey done last year, do not know that the Dalai Lama is Buddhist, which is a surprising finding.”

As a student, Harrison grew interested in Buddhist Studies and Buddhist literature in particular after majoring in Chinese and Japanese. He is now the co-director of the HCBSS, which contributes to the Buddhist Studies Program and is dedicated to raising public interest and awareness of different aspects of Buddhism. A unit of the Division of International, Comparative and Area Studies, it is closely affiliated with the Department of Religious Studies, the Tibetan Studies Initiative and the Buddhist Community at Stanford.

According to HCBSS associate director Irene Lin, part of the purpose of its founding in 1997 was that the field of Buddhist Studies and humanities in general did not have many resources. Formerly called the Stanford Center for Buddhist Studies until 2008, the Center was renamed when it received an endowment, as well a graduate fellowship and a visiting professorship, from the HCBSS.

The HCBSS is dedicated to promoting the academic study and public understanding of the Buddhist tradition. It conducts a number of research projects and seminars and brings research fellows to the campus. According to Lin, applicants from around the world are accepted depending on how closely their research projects correlate with existing studies. The rigor of the application process ensures applicants will be able to contribute to and learn from the Center.

Carl Bielefeldt, co-director of HCBSS and chair of the Religious Studies Department, is involved in the Soto Zen Text Project, which works at translating the materials used for the practice of Soto Zen, a sect of Zen in Japanese Buddhism. Harrison, too, is working on research on the study of Buddhist literature.

“At present, that study is undergoing a kind of boom period because of the discovery of large numbers of new Buddhist manuscripts in Pakistan and Afghanistan,” Harrison said. “There is also material coming out of the People’s Republic of China, which was previously held in Tibet.”

Harrison added that the Buddhist manuscript project will contribute to a better understanding of the Buddhist tradition from both the perspectives of the Buddhist scholar and practitioner, which are becoming more integrated, he said. According to Harrison, many scholars are also practitioners who have an insider’s perspective on the tradition. At the same time, he said, practitioners who read research benefit from new analyses and translations of the texts.

“It’s not as if the two worlds are entirely separate,” he said.

Harrison added that the Center holds events that expose students to the practitioner’s perspective.

“I think [students] should have some appreciation of what Buddhism is like as a living tradition,” he said. “It’s not just something that’s dead and pinned to the wall like a butterfly.”

According to Bielefeldt in an email to The Daily, despite current research efforts, the Center lacks multi-disciplinary perspectives including history, literature, art and anthropology because of the fact that the faculty works within the Religious Studies department. Furthermore, the coverage of Buddhism in the Religious Studies department does not extend much beyond India, China and Japan.

“[Coverage is] as broad as we can make it given that we only have two faculty members at present,” Harrison said. “But we try and compensate for that by inviting people who can give our students and interested members of the public a different perspective.”

According to Bielefeldt, these weaknesses are also compensated through library facilities and research funding. HCBSS holds research seminars, workshops, conferences and lectures for scholars. Each quarter, the Center brings a speaker to talk about different practices.

Around one-third of all the events are directed specifically towards the public, all or most of which are free, with no registration required, Lin said, and the theme of the event varies according to demand. For instance, there have been a series of events related to Buddhist art and Tibetan Buddhism. According to Lin, the events have attracted a considerable amount of campus interest, with about 100 to 300 attendees at each event.

What makes Buddhist Studies so relevant today? Lin emphasized “Engaged Buddhism,” which examines the different ways Buddhism can be applied in society, from social work to healing to working at corporations. Harrison stressed the importance of studying and keeping religions alive in an age she said is becoming increasingly secular.
