Women’s tennis continues dominance over Spartans

Feb. 15, 2017, 12:30 p.m.

The No. 4-ranked Stanford women’s tennis team continued its dominant season on Tuesday afternoon as they swept San Jose State in a 7-0 victory. This is the team’s third straight victory without giving up a single point.

The women’s team took the first point of the match and clinched doubles, winning two out of three total sets. No. 36 senior Caroline Doyle and sophomore No. 13 Melissa Lord won their set 6-3, and freshman Emma Higuchi and No. 75 sophomore Caroline Lampl claimed their set 6-2. This put the Cardinal at an advantage heading into the singles matches.

The women breezed their way through the singles competition, winning all six matches to complete the victory. The first two victories of the day came from senior Taylor Davidson (6-1, 6-3) and Lord (6-2, 6-1). This set up freshman Emily Arbuthnott for a clinching victory on the fifth singles court (6-1, 6-3), the first clincher of her career.

Even after Stanford had nailed down a win, the rest of the women’s team powered through their matches. Lampl (6-2, 6-2) and Higuchi (6-1, 6-2) were the next to finish their singles matches, leaving only one match remaining.

The closest contest of the day was between Doyle and the No. 93 nationally ranked Sybille Gauvain, the top ranked players for their respective teams. This singles match-up ended up going to 12 games in the first set, with Doyle eventually coming out on top with a score of 7-5, 6-2.

With this win notched under their belt, the ever-dominant Cardinal improve to 3-0 on the season. The rest of this week will be a serious challenge for the team as they head to Orlando, Florida on Friday to face off against No. 6 Oklahoma State University. On Sunday, the women will play against No. 1 Florida. By any standards, the defending NCAA champions have an incredibly difficult series of matches, which will no doubt test the pattern of Cardinal dominance displayed on the courts so far this season.
